Arize® 6444 Gold, a revolutionary rice hybrid launched in Indonesia

A new generation rice hybrid Arize® H6444 Gold offers dual advantage – high yield potential and protection from Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB)

Jakarta, 8 April 2016 – PT Bayer Indonesia today launches Arize® H6444 Gold, a revolutionary hybrid rice seed – the first of its kind to be made available in Indonesia – with high yield potential and a strong protection from Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB), a dreaded rice farming disease that cause considerable yield loss of between 20-60% annually especially in wet season.

Ashraf Al-ouf, President Director of PT Bayer Indonesia: “Arize® H6444 Gold is a major breakthrough & an innovative product from our Crop Science Division. In Indonesia, BLB affects more than 7 million hectares annually causing huge yield losses. The disease can afflict the rice plant in any of its growing stages and cause visible wilting of seedlings, yellowing and drying of leaves leading to 20-60% loss in yield depending on disease severity and crop stage at the time of infection. Arize®6444 Gold has the capability of ensuring high yields and effectively combating BLB. Arize® H6444 Gold offers solid and profitable and harvest of quality rice for Indonesian farmers will add value to Indonesian agriculture. Through Arize® H6444 Gold, we continue to bring Bayer’s innovative science to Indonesia as we remain in our commitment to help Indonesians achieve a better quality of life”

Speaking about the hybrid, Mohan Babu (Country Head Crop Science Division, Malaysia & Indonesia): “A slightly aromatic hybrid Arize® 6444 Gold with medium slender grains offers 20-35% yield advantage over commercial open-pollinated varieties. In the case of BLB attack, the yield advantage goes up very significantly compared to other traditional inbred or hybrid varieties. Bayer Crop Science’s seed to harvest now offers seeds and crop protection solutions through an integrated platform. This concept has proven to be very successful in delivering a comprehensive crop management solution to farmers across all major rice growing countries and now in Indonesia.”

The disease BLB, caused by a bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pathovar oryzae is estimated to cause significant annual economic loss of paddy in Indonesia. The situation is further challenging for farmers as no effective chemical treatment for this disease is currently available.

“Increasing rice yields is one of the key the principal challenges in Indonesia, today,” added Amit Trikha, Head of Seeds in the Crop Science Division of Bayer Asia Pacific.  “Indonesia is the world’s No.3 in rice growing area with more than 13 million hectares of harvested land. There is also a continuing need to increase the national production capacity so that the country can attain its national goal in food sufficiency. By using Bayer’s hybrid rice seeds, Indonesian rice farmers will be greatly empowered in their aim to achieve high harvest yield, and this is proven especially when compared to open-pollinated or ‘inbred’ varieties. Arize® H6444 Gold is created by a highly advanced integrated breeding approach that effectively combines plant pathology methodologies and molecular marker technology.”

Today, farmers in the greater Lampung witnessed the performance of Arize® H6444 Gold on a test field and they will be the first farmers to apply this revolutionary technology in Indonesia in the next planting season.
