Focus on Life Science Businesses

The Bayer Group is managed as a life science company with three divisions – Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Health and Crop Science – and the Animal Health business unit, which are also our reporting segments. The corporate functions, Business Services and the service company Currenta support the operational business. In 2017, the Bayer Group comprised 237 consolidated companies in 79 countries throughout the world. As described in further detail below, Bayer’s interest in Covestro AG stood at 24.6% as at the end of the reporting period. Covestro is no longer a reportable segment and has been accounted for using the equity method as of the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2017.

Division pharmaceuticals - prescription products

The Pharmaceuticals Division focuses on prescription products, especially for cardiology and women’s healthcare, and on specialty therapeutics in the areas of oncology, hematology and ophthalmology. The division also comprises the Radiology Business Unit which markets contrast-enhanced diagnostic imaging equipment together with the necessary contrast agents.

Division Consumer Health - non-prescription products

The Consumer Health Division markets mainly non-prescription products in the dermatology, dietary supplement, analgesic, gastrointestinal, allergy, cold and flu, foot care, sun protection and cardiovascular risk prevention categories. These products include globally known brands such as Claritin™, Aspirin™, Aleve™, Bepanthen™/Bepanthol™, Canesten™, Dr. Scholl’s™ and Coppertone™.

Division Crop Science - seeds, crop protection and non-agricultural pest control

The Crop Science Division has businesses in seeds, crop protection and non-agricultural pest control. It is organized into two operating units: Crop Protection/Seeds and Environmental Science. Crop Protection/Seeds markets a broad portfolio of high-value seeds along with innovative chemical and biological pest management solutions, at the same time providing extensive customer service for modern and sustainable agriculture. Environmental Science focuses on non-agricultural applications, with a broad portfolio of pest control products and services for areas ranging from the home and garden sector to forestry.

Division Animal Health - Products for farm and companion animals

Our products for farm and companion animals are managed in the Animal Health, business unit, which reports to the Board member responsible for the Crop Science Division.

Central Service Functions:

Central Service Function Bayer Business Services (BBS)

The Corporate Functions and Bayer Business Services operate as Group-wide competence centers in which business support services are bundled.

Central Service Function Currenta

Currenta is the service company responsible for managing and operating the Chempark sites in Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen.
